Highlights

  • Pristine and wild island — no tourist infrastructure, just white sand and turquoise waters.
  • Pink flamingo watching — resident colony of several hundred birds (October-May season).
  • Swimming in crystal-clear waters — shallow bottom for 100 metres, ideal for families and children.

The Pink Flamingo Island (officially Ras Rmel, nicknamed Flamingo Island) is a sandbank several kilometres northeast of Djerba, accessible only by boat. It is one of the last preserved paradises of Djerba: no hotels, no beach bars, no sun loungers — just white sand, turquoise waters and, depending on the season, several hundred pink flamingos that come to feed in the adjacent lagoon.

Our trip departs from Houmt Souk Marina, with a 30-40 minute navigation to the island. Depending on your chosen package: 2-3 hour stopover on the island with picnic lunch provided, or full day with barbecue on board and several swimming stops.

Best season for flamingo watching: October to May (resident season). In summer, flamingos migrate further north — the island remains beautiful but without the colony.

Frequently asked questions

Will we definitely see pink flamingos?
October to May: yes, almost certainly (resident colony). June to September: the majority have migrated, but a few individuals often remain. If the sea is too rough to reach the flamingo lagoon, the skipper will choose an alternative route.
Does the island have any infrastructure?
No, and that is precisely the appeal: no beach bars, no umbrellas, no toilets. It is a protected island — bring everything you need (water, cap, sunscreen). We provide the picnic.
What is the best season?
April to October for swimming. October to May for flamingos. The ideal compromise: April, May, September, October.
Is it suitable for families?
Yes, perfectly. The bottom is sandy and shallow for 100 metres. Ideal for children from age 4. Reduced rate -50% for ages 4-11.
What should I bring?
Sunscreen (very important — no shade on the island), hat, sunglasses, extra water, swimsuit, towel, rock shoes (optional), camera.
Is there snorkeling?
Yes but limited — the island is on a shallow sandy bottom with little colour. For real snorkeling, we recommend the excursion to Borj El Kastil.
Can the boat be privatized?
Yes, on request. From €450/day for groups up to 12 persons. Contact us.
