Highlights

  • Pristine, unspoilt island — no tourist infrastructure, just white sand and turquoise waters.
  • Pink flamingo spotting — resident colony of several hundred birds (October–May season).
  • Swimming in crystal-clear waters — shallow sandy bottom for 100 metres, ideal for families and children.

The Pink Flamingo Island (officially Ras Rmel, nicknamed Flamingo Island) is a sandbank a few kilometres north-east of Djerba, accessible only by boat. It is one of Djerba's last unspoilt paradises: no hotels, no beach bars, no sun loungers — just white sand, turquoise waters and, depending on the season, several hundred pink flamingos that come to feed in the adjacent lagoon.

Our boat trip departs from the Marina in Houmt Souk, with a 30-40 minute sail to the island. Depending on your chosen option: a 2-3 hour stop on the island with a picnic lunch provided, or a full day with a barbecue on board and several swimming stops.

Best season to see the flamingos: October to May (nesting period). In summer, the flamingos migrate further north — the island remains stunning but without the colony.

Frequently asked questions

Will we definitely see pink flamingos?
October to May: yes, almost certainly (resident colony). June to September: most migrate, but a few usually remain. If the sea is too rough to reach the flamingo lagoon, the skipper will choose an alternative route.
Does the island have facilities?
No, and that's precisely the appeal: no beach bar, no parasols, no WC facilities. It's a protected island — bring everything you need (water, cap, sunscreen). We provide the packed lunch.
What's the best season?
April to October for swimming. October–May for flamingos. The ideal compromise: April, May, September, October.
Is it suitable for families?
Perfectly suited. The bottom is sandy and shallow for 100 metres. Ideal for children from age 4. Reduced rate of 50% off for ages 4–11.
What should we bring?
Sunscreen (very important — no shade on the island), hat, sunglasses, extra water, swimwear, towel, reef shoes (optional), camera.
Is there snorkelling?
Yes but limited — the island sits on a sandy seabed with little colour. For proper snorkelling, we recommend the Borj El Kastil excursion.
Can the boat be privately hired?
Yes, on request. From €450/day for groups up to 12 persons. Contact us.
