Maritime Heritage — Ancestral Fishing
Discover traditional net fishing, charfias and ancestral techniques.
Highlights
- ✓UNESCO Heritage — the charfia (palm-frond fish trap) is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
- ✓Experienced Djerbian fisherman-patron who passes down his knowledge from generation to generation.
- ✓Discovery of ancient techniques — nets, lines, charfia, and the maritime wisdom of the Djerbians.
This excursion is a dive into Djerba's maritime heritage, and more specifically into the charfia — a unique fishing technique found nowhere else in the world, inscribed on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list since 2020. It is a palm palisade planted in the sea forming a chamber where fish enter at high tide and become trapped at low tide.
This technique, over 2,000 years old, is still practised today by around a hundred Djerbien families. Our partner fisherman takes you to see his charfia, explains how it works, and participates in checking the traps. It's not a show, it's a genuine working day at sea.
