Aïn Draham, a mountain station perched at 800 m in the Kroumirie range (North-Western Tunisia), offers an unexpected face of Tunisia: dense cork-oak forests, wild boar, springs, hiking and hunting. Its cool climate (8 °C in winter, 25 °C in summer) makes it a summer refuge for Tunisians. The Hammam Bourguiba thermal station nearby adds a wellness retreat dimension.
Kroumirie is inhabited by the Berber Kroumirs, tribes long resistant to central powers. In the 9th century, the Kroumirs resisted the Aghlabides and then the Hafsides. Under the Ottomans, the region remained semi-autonomous. In 1881, an incursion of Kroumir tribes into Algeria served as a pretext for France to establish a protectorate over Tunisia (the 'Kroumirs Affair').
Under French protectorate, Aïn Draham became a summer retreat prized by colonial officials who built alpine chalets and hotels there. The exploitation of cork-oak (production of corks and insulation materials) became the main economic activity. After independence, the station developed for summer Tunisian tourism. El Feija National Park (1990) protects wildlife (wild boar, lynx, birds of prey).
