About El Haouaria

El Haouaria, a village of 18,000 inhabitants at the north-eastern tip of Cap Bon (facing Sicily), is famous for its Roman caves (sandstone quarries) carved into the cliffs since the 2nd century BC. The region is also the cradle of Tunisian falconry (Falconry Festival in June) and a prime location for observing migratory birds (Cap Bon, a major passage point).

📜 History of El Haouaria

Antiquity

The Roman caves (Ghar El Kebir) are sandstone quarries excavated from the 2nd century BC onwards by the Carthaginians and Romans to build Carthage. 24 monumental caves with natural vaults lit by light shafts.

Medieval and Islamic Period

Falconry has been practised in El Haouaria since Roman times. Local falconers capture migratory raptors (peregrine falcons, goshawks), train them, then release them at the end of the season. The Falconry Festival (since 1965) celebrates this living tradition. UNESCO intangible heritage 2010.
