About Douiret

Douiret, a semi-abandoned Berber village perched 100 metres high on a limestone cliff (40 km from Tataouine), offers one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Dahar. Its ghorfas (grain cells) carved into the cliff, its underground mosque and its ecomuseum make it an exceptional site. A night in the troglodytic hotel Dar Ayed is unforgettable.

📜 History of Douiret

Antiquity

Douiret was founded in the 12th century by Berbers fleeing the Hilalian invasions. An impregnable defensive position: limestone cliff, access by unique pathway. The village once counted up to 3,000 inhabitants. The ksar (collective granary) served as a refuge in case of attack. The underground mosque is unique in Africa.

Medieval and Islamic Period

In the 20th century, rural exodus emptied the village. Today, a few families still live in the restored ghorfas. The Dar Ayed hotel offers a night in a troglodyte dwelling. UNESCO is studying a candidacy for the ksours of the Dahar.
