Ksar Jouamaa is one of the best-preserved ksours in the Dahar: a fortified collective granary from the 15th century, housing 200 ghorfas in clay and stone, whitewashed with lime. Built by the Berber tribe of the Jouamaa to protect their harvests from invasions, it offers an exceptional panorama over the Tataouine plains.
Built in the 15th century by the Jouamaa Berbers, the ksar served as a protected collective granary for the tribe: each family stored barley, wheat, olive oil and dates in a numbered ghorfa. The thick walls (1m), iron-reinforced palm wood doors and elevated position made it impregnable. The Hilalian invasions (1057), followed by raids from Saharan nomads in the 19th century, justified this defensive system.
The Jouamaa inhabited the ksar until the early 20th century. Rural exodus progressed under French protectorate rule: inhabitants moved down to the plains. The ksar was restored in the 2000s and registered as national heritage. Several ghorfas are now converted into a troglodyte hotel (Ksar Jouamaa Hotel) allowing visitors to experience authentic Berber life.
