Tamezret, a Berber village perched at 600 m altitude (10 km from Matmata), preserves its traditional white architecture and its Chelha (Berber) language. More authentic than neighbouring Matmata, it is a living museum of Berber culture in the Dahar: domed houses, winding alleyways, thousand-year-old mosque.
Tamezret was founded in the 12th century by Berbers fleeing Hilalian invasions. Strategic perched position, defensive access. The village preserves its Chelha Berber language (a rarity in Tunisia). Under the Ottomans and French protectorate, Tamezret remained away from development. Today, rural exodus has emptied the village but a few families preserve tradition.
