Ksar Ghilan is the most accessible and spectacular oasis in the Tunisian desert: a natural thermal spring at 29 °C springs forth in the heart of the dunes of the Erg Oriental, 220 km south of Djerba. The Roman fort Tisavar (2nd century), a remnant of the African limes, adds a historical dimension. Camp Pansea for luxury camping, bathing in the spring, camel rides and 4×4 excursions in the dunes: this is the quintessential Tunisian Saharan experience.
The Roman fort Tisavar was built in the 2nd century A.D. by the Legio III Augusta to control the southern frontier of the Roman Empire (limes Tripolitanus). Rectangular plan 16 × 19 m, 4 corner towers, garrison commanded by a centurion. Abandoned in the 4th century. The natural thermal spring already attracted Berber and Roman caravans.
In the Middle Ages, the oasis served as a relay point on the transsaharan caravan route. The Bedouin M'razig made it a regular watering point. In the 20th century, nascent Saharan tourism (1960–1970) made it an emblematic site. Camp Pansea (1980) then the Hotel du Désert (2010) established luxury camping sites.
