Nefta, an oasis of 30,000 palm trees 25 km west of Tozeur, is famous for its 'Basket' (an immense natural depression in the heart of the palm grove fed by 200 springs) and its exceptional Sufi heritage. Centre of the Qadiriyya brotherhood since the 13th century, the city is home to over 100 mosques and zaouïas. Historic capital of Tunisian Sufism.
Nefta (ancient Negeta) has been inhabited since Antiquity. In the 2nd century, it was a Roman station on the route from Capsa (Gafsa) to Cydamus (Ghadamès). The city prospered thanks to dates and trans-Saharan caravan trade.
In the 13th century, the Sufi saint Sidi Bou Ali founded the Qadiriyya brotherhood in Nefta, making the city a major centre of Maghrebi Sufism. Over 100 mosques and zaouïas would be built over the centuries. Under the Ottomans and French protectorate, Nefta remained a spiritual and commercial centre. Today, tourism is developing with hotels such as Dar Hi (contemporary architecture inspired by traditional clay).
