Tamerza, a mountain oasis 90 km north of Tozeur in the Saharan Atlas, combines spectacular landscapes and Berber heritage. Its natural waterfall (rare in Tunisia), its ancient abandoned Berber village perched on the cliff and its deep gorges make it one of the most photographed oases in the Sahara. The film 'The English Patient' (1996) was filmed here.
Tamerza has been inhabited since Antiquity by the Berbers. In the 3rd century, the Romans established a frontier garrison there. Under Islam, the Berber village perched on the cliff develops (12th century). Catastrophic flooding in 1969: the old village is partially destroyed, inhabitants rebuild at the foot of the cliff.
Today, the old abandoned village on the cliff is a spectacular tourist destination. Saharan Atlas landscapes attract filmmakers: The English Patient (1996), Mirages by Albert Lewin (1985), numerous advertisements.
