Zaafrane, a small Berber oasis 15 km south of Douz, is the true 'gateway to the desert': no roads beyond, just tracks leading to the endless dunes of the Erg Oriental. A traditional starting point for caravans, it is today a privileged base for authentic desert camps in the heart of the dunes.
Zaafrane is inhabited by the Adhara Bedouins, an Arabised nomadic tribe. The village served as a relay on the trans-Saharan caravan route connecting Douz to the Grand Erg. Under the French protectorate and after independence, there was progressive settlement. Today, Saharan tourism (desert camps) is the main activity.
