About Sbeïtla

Sbeïtla (ancient Sufetula), 250 km south-west of Tunis, is home to one of the best-preserved Roman sites in North Africa. Its monumental forum flanked by three temples (Capitol) dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva is an architectural rarity. A prosperous city thanks to olive oil, Sbeïtla became in the 7th century the seat of the short-lived Byzantine kingdom of the Patrician Gregory before the Arab conquest.

📜 History of Sbeïtla

Antiquity

Sufetula was founded in the 1st century AD by veterans of the Roman legion. It prospered rapidly thanks to intensive olive cultivation in the Upper Tell region. In the 3rd century, the city was one of the richest in Africa: monumental forum, Capitol with three temples, theatre, basilicas, baths. Christianity was established in the 4th century (magnificent Christian basilicas).

Medieval and Islamic Period

In 647, the Byzantine Patrician Gregory seceded from Constantinople and settled in Sufetula with his daughter Prima, whom he offered as a wife to the Arabs. It was a bad move: the same year, the Arab army of Abdullah ibn Saad defeated Gregory, killed the Patrician and plundered the city. Sufetula was permanently abandoned. The ruins, exceptionally well preserved by the dryness, were rediscovered by French archaeologists in the 19th century.
