Tabarka (ancient Thabraca) was founded by the Phoenicians around the 8th century BC as a trading post. Under Rome, it became an important port for exporting Numidian marble extracted from Chemtou. Several Roman remains (forum, basilicas, mosaics of Tabarka now in the Bardo) testify to this prosperity. In the 5th century, the Vandals occupied the region.
In the medieval period, Tabarka declined. In the 16th century, the fort on the rocky islet was built by the Genoese (merchants of the King of France, who bought the islet from Charles V in 1542) to exploit the red coral from the seabed. The Genoese maintained a commercial presence until 1741, when Ali Pasha of Tunis reclaimed the islet. The islet quarter remained inhabited until the early 20th century.
Under French protectorate rule (1881–1956), Tabarka became a mining centre (lead and zinc mine at Gardimaou) and fishing port. Tabarka–7 November international airport was inaugurated in 1991. The Tabarka International Jazz Festival, created in 1973, became one of the major summer music events in the Mediterranean. Today, Tabarka focuses on niche tourism: coral diving, trekking in Kroumirie, golf, and the jazz festival.

Built by the Genoese Lomellini family who purchased the islet from Charles V in 1542 to exploit red coral. Typical Italian military architecture: corner bastions, keep, cisterns, chapel. Remained Genoese until 1741, reclaimed by the Husainid beys then abandoned.
Important Roman city thanks to Numidian marble trade. Forum, Christian basilicas, exceptional mosaics (now in the Bardo Museum). Remains still visible beneath modern city streets.
