Takrouna, a perched Berber village set 200 m high on a rocky outcrop between Sousse and Hammamet (80 km from each), offers one of the most spectacular panoramas over the Sahel plain. Its whitewashed houses clinging to the rock, its thousand-year-old mosque and its preserved atmosphere make it an unmissable stopover.
Takrouna was founded in the 8th century by the Berbers. An impregnable defensive position, accessed via a unique pathway. The village develops from the 12th century onwards. A thousand-year-old mosque sits at its summit. In the 20th century, rural exodus progresses but a few families preserve tradition. Today, the village is a major tourist destination of the interior Sahel.
