📜 Testour's History

Antiquity

Testour was founded around 1609 by the Moriscos (Andalusians expelled from Spain by Philip III). 80,000 Moriscos arrived in Tunisia and settled mainly in the Medjerda valley. Testour became their cultural capital. Architecture, malouf music, gardens, agriculture (oranges, olives): they transformed the region.

Medieval and Islamic Period

Testour's Great Mosque (1631) is unique: a square-minaret in Andalusian style (rare in Tunisia where they are octagonal), Hispanic-Moorish architectural influences. In the 20th century, Testour became the centre of malouf, Arab-Andalusian music inherited from Andalusia. International Malouf Festival since 1967.
