Kerkouane (ancient Iazani) was founded by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC. A prosperous city thanks to purple dye, trade and agriculture in Cap Bon. The city had 2,000 inhabitants. Plundered by Agathocles of Syracuse in 310 BC, it was definitively destroyed by the Romans during the First Punic War in 256 BC, then permanently abandoned after 146 BC.
Unique feature: while Carthage and all other Punic cities were razed and rebuilt by the Romans, Kerkouane was simply left abandoned. Its urban planning and Punic domestic architecture are therefore perfectly preserved. Discovered in 1952. UNESCO 1985 and 1986.
