Its 8th-century ribat, which served as the backdrop for the Monty Python film 'Life of Brian' (1979), overlooks the modern marina. Bourguiba Mausoleum, medina, beaches and marina make Monastir a cherished family destination.
Monastir (ancient Ruspina) is a Phoenician then Roman city. Julius Caesar lands here in 46 BC before the Battle of Thapsus against the Pompeians. In the 2nd century, the city flourishes thanks to olive oil and maritime trade. Under the Vandals then the Byzantines, it declines.
In 796, Aghlabid emir Harthama Ibn Ayan had the Monastir ribat built, one of the oldest in the Maghreb. This fortified monastery defends the coast from Byzantine incursions. Pious murabitun (fighters for the faith) stay there. Under the Hafsids then the Ottomans (16th–19th centuries), the ribat is enlarged and the commercial port developed.
Under French protectorate, Monastir is a modest town. Habib Bourguiba is born here in 1903. A graduate of the Sorbonne, Neo-Destour activist, prisoner of the French, he becomes first President of the Tunisian Republic in 1957 and implements far-reaching reforms (secularism, women's rights, education). He chooses to transform his native city into a showcase of the new State: Monastir-Skanes international airport (1968), family mausoleum, modern seaside resort. Bourguiba dies here in 2000 and is buried here.
