Zarzis, a south-eastern coastal town in Tunisia (75,000 inhabitants), 60 km south of Djerba, combines ancestral palm groves with pristine beaches. Its commercial port and hotel zone make it a peaceful seaside destination, an alternative to Djerba. The region is famous for its olive oil and dates.
Zarzis (ancient Gergis) is a Phoenician and later Roman city, a commercial port on the trade route from Carthage to Tripoli. In the 8th century, the Arab conquest transformed the region. Under the Ottomans, Zarzis became an olive oil port. In the 19th century, the Jewish community was significant here (synagogue remained active until the exodus of the 1950s).
Under French protectorate, Zarzis developed modestly. After independence, seaside tourism arrived with the creation of Djerba-Zarzis international airport (1970). Today, Zarzis is known for its beaches and olive oil, and unfortunately as a departure point for illegal migration to Italy.
