About Tataouine

Tataouine, capital of its namesake governorate in the far south-east, is the gateway to the ksours of Dahar: Ksar Ouled Soltane, Ksar Hadada, Chenini, Douiret, Guermessa. It is also the city that inspired George Lucas to name the planet Tatooine in Star Wars (1977). Its ksours museum, Sunday market and the Gazelle Hotel (1928, listed as a historic monument) are unmissable.

📜 History of Tataouine

Antiquity

Tataouine has been inhabited since Antiquity by Berbers (the Ouerghemma tribe). The Romans maintained small forts there (Tisavar at Ksar Ghilane). The Arab conquest (7th century) and Hilalian invasions (1057) forced the Berbers to take refuge in hilltop villages and build the ksours (fortified granaries) of neighbouring Dahar.

Medieval and Islamic Period

Under the Ottomans, Tataouine remained a small caravan town on the Sahara route. The French protectorate (1881–1956) turned it into a military garrison (Battalions of Africa 'Bat' d'Af''). In 1939, Senegalese soldiers fighting for France sent postcards from here to their families, popularising the name 'Tataouine' in West Africa.

Modern and Contemporary Era

In the 1970s, George Lucas, whilst preparing Star Wars, saw the name Tataouine on a map of Tunisia and adopted it for his fictional desert planet (becoming Tatooine). The film was shot in 1977 in the Dahar ksours and in Matmata. Today, Tataouine is a major hub for Star Wars tourism and the base for exploring the ksours, which are candidates for UNESCO status.

What to see in Tataouine?

The town itself is modest: Sunday market, Ksours museum, Gazelle hotel. The main appeal is using it as a base to explore the Dahar ksours and hilltop villages.
